ABOUT THE DATA STORY

A map is the start of the question, not the end.

World by Numbers is built to make global indicators fast to explore while keeping the underlying source, year and coverage visible.

01

What you are seeing

Each country is colored using the selected metric’s latest available observation. Rankings use the same values shown on the map. A missing value is treated as “no data”, not zero.

02

Why the years differ

International indicators are not always published on the same schedule. The interface therefore shows the observed year at country level and the overall year range for the active dataset.

03

How it stays fast

Public-source data is collected ahead of time, normalized by country code and written into compact category files. Your browser reads those static files instead of waiting for an external statistics API.

04

How to interpret it

Rankings are descriptive, not judgments about which country is “better”. Definitions differ by indicator, so use the source link and unit before comparing metrics with very different meanings.

Methodology

Built for exploration, with the boring details left visible.

The current collection uses World Bank Open Data indicators and a simplified Natural Earth country geometry. Data is refreshed through a scheduled pipeline; source metadata travels with every metric. This page is an exploratory visualization, so important decisions should always be checked against the linked primary dataset and its definition.
